On Traveling & Being Free From More Than Just Gluten

This photo was taken in the Navarra Region of Spain.

Alright, it's time for some real world talk.

I don't often talk about my own personal challenges of traveling gluten free because I like to be that person that brings hope and solutions - not feelings of hopelessness or struggle. So while I may travel many places and encounter many absolutely delightful experiences eating out safely - it's not always so easy.

In my overall experience, when dining out (at most establishments - but not all!) and you start to give your server you're list of what you can't have - their eyes tend to glaze over after about the second item. Even with customized restaurant cards I've created for myself - it still seems to be quite the challenge to get past that second thing you can't have. Add a different language to the mix and things get even more complicated.

A Slow Return

Well, I'm back.

It's been a much slower return to blogging than I initially anticipated. After our 3 week trip to Europe, where my camera broke, I came back to a computer that had some major repair work to be done. Then I was off to Denver and Portland. And then there were other important things that took priority in our transition back to life at home.

Mighty Knits at Parsley & Co.

Those of you that follow me on twitter or instagram will know that I'm a knitter. And those of you that remember my 30 Before 30 list, one of the items was to attend a life/creativity retreat.

Well, the stars have aligned and I am so thrilled to attend Camp Mighty next month! One of the things I love about the Camp Mighty event is the group fundraiser that we all participate in to raise money for charity:water. An amazing organization that brings clean and safe drinking water to communities in developing nations.

How does this relate to knitting? Well, one of the items on my life list is to open my first Etsy shop to sell hand knit items and since I needed to fundraise it seemed like the perfect time to cross that one off.

So, I would now like to introduce my very first Etsy shop!

Take Aways from BlogHer Food 2012

Last week I shared my overall experience at BlogHer Food 2012 and this week I'd like to share a couple of the take aways that stood out to me during the various sessions I attended. Overall, I came away feeling energized - creatively, intellectually, and entrepreneur-ially. So here's a of my big take aways from BlogHer Food 2012;

* Think about why you do what you do.

* Keep some personal projects, ones that aren't going to be posted on your blog.

* Surround yourself with colossal dreams.

* Back up your blog!

* If you don't already have photoshop or another paid photo editing software, go, download GIMP. Also, read the live blog of this amazing Post-Processing session - I feel like my editing skills just took a giant leap forward!

My Experience at BlogHer Food 2012

This past weekend I had the great opportunity to attend my first blogging conference: BlogHer Food 2012. It was a very interesting and almost over stimulating experience - so much information and so many amazing people to meet. I'll admit that I got a bit star struck seeing Tory Avey, Molly Wizenburg, Terry Walters, and Elise Bauer. And a bit teary eyed listening to Diane Cu, Todd Porter, and Kim Sunee.

Under normal circumstances, I could never afford to attend a conference like this - so when I found out that BlogHer Food was headed to Seattle I applied for a "BlogHership". Sort of a take off of an internship, a BlogHership allows you to attend the conference without the fee in exchange for volunteering your time to help out with conference operations. I was very fortunate to be accepted as a "mic wrangler" - which meant I was assigned to run the microphone to participants during several sessions.

My 30 Before 30 List

I love lists.

In March I participated in 30 Days of Lists and it was so much fun and so centering. I like the organization of it all. Mandi over at Living for Pretty posted a 30 Things To Do Before 30 List and I decided that with about 2 1/2 years left to go - I really ought to make one for myself. And since it's got lots of travel, food, and garden related items - I thought I would share it here!

I'll keep coming back and updating the list with successfully accomplished things! In fact, since starting this list in my Moleskine Monthly Planner, I've actually accomplished one of the items - sewing a dress for myself.

Things I'm Afraid To Tell You

Last week on Twitter I noticed some buzz about this post concept called Things I'm Afraid To Tell You. I was curious but decided just to wait and see what it might be about. On Thursday, an amazing crew of bloggers led by Ez of Creature Comforts posted real and honest things about themselves and their lives. Their posts were inspired by this post from Jess of Makeunder My Life - who I'm delighted to have discovered for the first time!

As I read through the lovely and sincere posts, I felt so much better. It was such a comforting reminder that I am not alone and that while the blogging world can look fabulous and perfect, reality is, well, a bit more real.

One Year Later: A Gluten Free Wedding In Carmel, California
One year ago today we were having one of the best days of our lives.  Bringing our families and friends together, eating delicious food, laughing, visiting, and dancing the night away.  Looking back on it all, wow were we fortunate to have such beautiful, fun, and easy wedding.

We'll be celebrating with a dinner at Tilth and by simply spending some time together. With work and school, our lives are quite full and it's wonderful to just have a few moments together.

So with that, I thought I would repost the story of our AMAZING wedding food which was almost entirely gluten and dairy free.
