Gluten Free in Revelstoke, British Columbia
An unplanned but much needed night in Revelstoke, British Columbia turned out to be quite the delicious stop over. While almost every little mountain town we drove through on this trip seemed to have a little natural foods store, Revelstoke was like hitting a jackpot in terms of allergen friendly food. So much so, that I'm absolutely positive I must return - after all, Revelstoke could be the next Whistler (check out the length of these runs).
I found this great foodie article about Revelstoke's speciality food merchants and wished I could have visited every spot on the list. We settled for a take out dinner from Woolsey Creek Bistro and a morning coffee stop at Sangha Bean.
Woolsey Creek Bistro is actually featured as a top pick in the British Columbia Lonely Planet Guide and I totally get why. Even with the cabin looking exterior, from the website I expected to walk into to a rather fancy establishment complete with white tablecloths. Instead, I was greeted with a wood walled cabin slash diner interior lit with soft light and candles. Immediately, I felt at home - if I lived locally, this is the kind of place I would eat all the time.
At the front desk, the bistro keeps a chart to provide allergy information on all their dishes - which made it incredibly simple to cross reference my needs for a gluten and cows milk dairy free meal. I ended up with the wild salmon which came with a very thoughtful selection of produce. As opposed to a standard over steamed set of veggies - the large fillet of salmon was perched atop a heaping selection of acorn squash, broccolini, Paris Market carrots, and three types of citrus.
On our way out of town, we wanted to check out a local coffee establishment - preferably one of the most hippy dippy variety. Turns out I picked just right. Sangha Bean was a comfortable neighborhood establishment with lots of obvious ties to the community (something I just melt over). Local art decks the walls, a small handmade goods area occupies part of the shop, and information about local artists is well displayed. The shop itself offers a full array of coffee drinks, complete with soy, rice, and almond milks. Small plates and gluten free treats are also available. When I ordered my almond milk latte to go, the barista explained to me that their only to-go cups were mason jars available for a $1 deposit.
I just loved this.
Even thought I knew we wouldn't be back in Revelstoke anytime soon, I just love supporting such a sustainable and community oriented business.
