Trip Video: Alaska's Turnagain Arm
When I travel for my less than creative day job, I make it a point to spend at least a little bit of time while off the clock creating. Last week, I was traveling solo in Alaska and had about 6 hours to spare, so I made an attempt at filming my next trip video. If nothing else, I figured it would be good practice - even if I didn't get enough footage to put together a video. With a combination of brand new editing software and some seriously serendipitous timing - I've ended up with some of my favorite shots I've ever taken.
Every single time I've visited Anchorage, I've driven the Seward Highway down the Turnagain Arm to the Portage Glacier. At just over an hours drive from the city - it's a short getaway I never tire of. Each time I've driven it, I get the same sense of awe as I did the first time in 2010. On this most recent trip I was lucky enough to drive it twice and on the second trip, the evening just before leaving, I managed to be in the right place at the right time to capture two amazing sights. The bore tide on the Turnagain Arm along with the two fabulous women who surfed it and the serenity of kite skiers and snowboarders on frozen Portage Lake.
Practical Tips
Give yourself at least an extra hour to stop and explore along the way. There are so many scenic views, hikes, and even a wildlife park along the way - you'll want to spend time soaking it all in.
Time your drive to bring you back to Anchorage at sunset, the views down the Turnagain arm are breathtaking at that time of day.
