Camp Here: Kicking Horse in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada

We'll call this the site that almost got away from us - the one we spent the previous night in the cab of the truck in an overflow parking lot hoping to get. The biggest downside with Kicking Horse Campground is that all the sites are first-come first-serve. So if you're planning to arrive on a weekend during the summer high season, you'll have to cross your fingers and hope for the best! There is a small overflow campground just down the road and the parking lot takes over after that.

Of the three new-to-me Canadian National Parks we explored on our summer camping road trip through the Rockies - Yoho completely stole my heart. From waking up to the view of glacier at our campsite, to walking around Emerald Lake, to conquering three hikes in just one day - I'm a total fan. There are just loads of great day hikes and spots to explore in this relatively compact park.

The Day of Three Hikes in Yoho National Park

At 1,310 square kilometers, Yoho National Park is the smallest of the four connected national parks in the Canadian Rockies (the three others being Banff, Jasper, and Kootenay). One of the advantages to it's relatively smaller size is the close proximity between trailheads.

Photo Essay: A Walk Around Emerald Lake

After an unplanned night of sleeping in the truck since all the campsites in Yoho National Park were full - I didn't exactly set out on this walk with the most open minded of dispositions. Never the less, the walk around Emerald Lake absolutely blew me away. No ordinary walk around a lake, the 5.2 kilometers are packed with varying environments and amazing views.

Spending two weeks road tripping and camping through the Canadian Rockies was both memorable in terms of the sights and experiences but also in the great learning moments. The conditions of our trip did not make things so easy - inclement weather, questionably advertised campsites, poisonous spiders - but, I'll tell you more about that next week.
