Gluten Free In Austin, Texas
Austin was the first out of state trip I had taken since going gluten free, so this post is almost a year overdue and my descriptions may be a bit vague. But I have to say, we found quite a few gluten free friendly spots while we were there. Probably the neatest part was the plethora of places that actually had real corn tortillas that didn't have any added gluten in them, these seems to be a hard find outside of Texas.
We also stayed in the most adorable little cottage at Verde Camp, which is near the South Congress area. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a place to stay in that area.
This was a our first stop after getting into Austin and they had a gluten free menu, so that made choices very easy.
It's somewhat interesting that we chose to stop here since it's named after the Pacific Northwest, and at the time, we had no idea we would be moving there so soon. They had a gluten free menu as well, but it was your typical brewery fare, steaks and salads, still plenty of choices though.
I loved this place and it had a wonderful atmosphere! We went here for a real Texas breakfast one morning and got some delicious breakfast tacos. They didn't have a gluten free menu, but were very understanding and thorough in checking on their products and what would be safe for me.
This was the big gluten free spot that we got a chance to stop at twice. It's a gluten free cafe plus a southwestern art gallery, which made it quite a fun spot. I ate my first plate of gluten and dairy free french toast here, they used rice milk in the egg batter, had some amazing tamales, and got a couple cups of dairy free mexican hot chocolate. Overall, a wonderful place and if we ever make it back to Austin, I look forward to stoping there again.
