Gluten Free In Boise, Idaho: A Quick Overnight
This was my second trip to Boise and I was feeling pretty good about my eating prospects since I knew of a couple of places from my last trip that were safe and it was only an overnight. How bad could it get? Not that bad at all - even discovered my new two favorite places in the city.
So I love myself a latte, but not being able to have cows milk dairy products or soy milk majorly limits where I can get a latte. I've only found a handful of spots that carry other alternative non-dairy milks. Finding Flying M Coffee in Boise was a real treat - it's a great cafe environment with lots of places to sit and they offer almond milk as an alternative! Unfortunately it doesn't look like they offer any gluten free treats, but frankly I'm just happy finding a place in Boise where I can get a non-dairy non-soy latte.
Last time I came to Boise - over 2 years ago, I didn't find any restaurants that really peaked my interest. In my searching for this year's trip I happily came across Fork, which sources their seasonal food locally - my kind of place. I made our reservations via Open Table and specified my food intolerances/restrictions. On their regular menu you will find that all the dishes that can be made gluten free are starred and there are plenty of options to choose from. Our server was also excellent and well informed of my dietary needs, so that made ordering very easy. I ended up with the locally raised Rainbow Trout - which always seems to be a great thing to order in Idaho - and it was incredibly good. If and when I make it back to Boise, I will most definitely be eating at Fork again - and it's really the first place I would recommend to anyone looking for a dinner spot in Boise.
Always a great stand-by of mine, I have to say that the food at the Boise location was incredibly fresh and the servers were particularly excellent, well informed, and nice! I also found out that they will be adding some new dishes to their lunch menu, hopefully that will mean a greater gluten free selection. The new menu is supposed to debut in early April.
You can never go wrong with a good old Co-op. A great produce selection and a wonderful case full of Boar's Head gluten free meats - the Lebanon Bologna is my favorite. This time I found some neat little travel packets of ground flaxseed - with two tablespoons in each and my favorite brand of chocolate, Equal Exchange. The Co-op is always my first stop in Boise to stock up on essentials like rice cakes, nut butter packets, spreadable goat cheese, etc. This time I also came away with two adorable copper cookie cutters in the shape of a giant gold fish and a maple leaf.
