Gluten Free In Anchorage, Alaska: Pleasant Labeling Surprises
Yet, another trip took me back to Anchorage and this time I decided I would only go to new places. I thought this would end up being a bit of a challenge, but after a couple of phone calls and some luck I ended up finding three different places with either gluten free menus or excellent labeling.
Recommended by a few colleagues, Ginger was a real treat with their gluten free menu and great service. Unfortunately, the menu isn't available online but they do have one in the restaurant so just ask your server. There were so many options to choose from, including plenty of vegetarian and dairy free dishes. I ended up with this amazing Banana & Lemon grass Soup (sounds weird I know, but it was so good I had to order a second cup) and Spring Rolls. Everything was delicious and with the variety of choices, I plan on making Ginger a regular stop whenever I'm in Anchorage.
Another pleasant surprise was Spenard Roadhouse, just outside of downtown, this spot had a wonderful comfortable vibe to it. Let's call it a hipster diner kind of feel. While their website does not show a gluten free menu, you can ask your server for one which will show you which dishes on the main menu are gluten free. I ended up with the Blackened Tiger Prawns which are served over a bed rice noodles and veggies with a yellow curry sauce. There were a good number of gluten free options including tater tots - such a fun idea! My tastes tend to run away from most American cuisine type restaurants, but the huge and very varied menu (seriously, it ranges from pizza to curry) at Spenard Roadhouse is sure to please just about everyone!
Yogurt Lounge
I ended up at Yogurt Lounge with some coworkers, expecting to not get anything. You see, after going cows milk dairy free back in the mid 2000s I just stopped going to ice cream type shops. I just figured they wouldn't have anything safe for me - even though I was able to eat plenty of friendly treats from the grocery store. Yogurt Land is a serve yourself kind of place and at each soft serve station there is a label that lists any allergens in each yogurt. Lucky for me I found a Mango Tango sorbet that said "Allergens: Nada!" After double and triple checking with the staff, I determined it was safe and got to enjoy some seriously delicious sorbet.
